What We Believe

All members of GCT confess the Christian faith, in accordance with Scripture, as an expression of beliefs for our covenanted membership. While we use these core convictions and statement of faith as a guide, we submit all things to Scripture as our final rule of correct belief and faithful practice.

Core Convictions

There are certain Biblical characteristics all true churches should share in common.  At the same time, individual churches may be faithful to the gospel while differing from each other in theological emphases and ministry priorities. Some churches may be distinguished by their denominational affiliation. Other churches may distinguish themselves by their ministry priorities. With so many faithful and fruitful churches in Pender County, what makes Grace Community Church of Topsail distinct?

These core convictions highlight the theological priorities deliberately emphasized by the elders of GCT. Many of these priorities we share with other churches; in some cases it is the way we put them into practice that will distinguish us from other churches. It is important to note that we derive no sense of superiority in the list that follows: these emphases simply express our understanding of biblical teaching and priorities. When other churches decide to highlight other priorities while remaining faithful to the gospel, we can thank God for them and commend them to other Christians with a clear conscience.

Worship

We aim to enjoy and display the worth of Christ in God-centered, Christ-exalting, Spirit-led, Bible-saturated corporate worship, including congregational singing, prayer, and expository preaching. In light of this value, we desire to experience God's presence by 1) Attending to God as He addresses us through His Word, by song, prayers, and fellowship; 2) Responding to him in grateful adoration; 3) Seeking to love, serve, and encourage each other with our gifts.

Prayer

We desire the life and ministry of our church—individually and corporately—to be dependent upon and fueled by prayer. Prayer is at the heart of our existence.  We are committed to depend on God’s grace and mercy in personal, family, and corporate prayer, so that in all our blessings the Giver will get the glory. Prayer lies at the very heart of God’s eternal plan to have a people for Himself—a people who know Him and who are known by Him. So prayer is not simply something Christians do; it’s an expression of who we are: children of a heavenly Father who live delighting in and depending upon Him.

Discipleship

We desire to grow and help each other grow in biblical truth and wisdom and faith and love, which show Christ as our greatest delight.
Within the church, the most fundamental way we do this is through relationships, fueled by the Word of God, that encourage us, exhort us, and strengthen us in our walk with Christ.

Loving One Another

We are committed to corporately pursue a life together in sacrificial, faith-sustaining care for each other in loving relationships at every level of youth and age, joy and sorrow, comfort and crisis, health and brokenness. In short, we need each other, and so we must give ourselves to purposeful involvement in each others’ lives, for the strength of the body, the witness of the gospel, and the glory of God.

Compassion

We desire to be involved in personal and corporate expressions of compassion to relieve human suffering, near and far, by means of short-term intervention and long-term engagement in order to show the justice, mercy, and beautiful compassion of Christ—forever. In light of this value, we desire to engage in mercy ministries of word and deed to the destitute, helpless, and poorest of the poor (locally and globally).fa

Local And Global outreach

We desire to cultivate a church culture were every member understands and embraces the biblical responsibility and privilege of sharing the gospel with others.
We encourage each of our members to bear witness to Jesus Christ and share the gospel: 1) in the network of relationships He provides for us, and 2) in contexts where we have particular opportunity or for which we have a particular burden.

Expository Preaching

Expository preaching, that is, preaching that goes "line-by-line" by explaining and applying Scripture in its biblical context, enables God’s word to shape our lives individually and as a church. God has ordained that His Word be the saving and sanctifying instrument of his people; not a person, not a personality, not a philosophy, not a tradition, nor a current trend.

Every member Serving

There are to be no passive participants in the church. Indeed, one of the primary reasons God saves us is to rescue us from an existence leading to death and to set us free to serve Him with joy. Service in the church is empowered by the Spirit of God, and God's Spirit distributes spiritual gifts to His people for the building up of the body of Christ and for the advance of the Gospel in the world.

Statement of Faith

The Word of God

We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:20, 21; Mark 13:31; John 8:31, 32; John 20:31; Acts 20:32

The Trinity

We believe that there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons; that these are equal in every divine perfection, and that they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence and redemption. Genesis 1:1, 26; John 1:1, 3; Matthew 28:19; John 4:24; Romans 1:19, 20; Ephesians 4:5, 6

God The Father

We believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love. We believe that He infallibly foreknows all that shall come to pass, that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ. Luke 10:21,22; Matthew 23:9; John 3:16; 6:27; Romans 1:7; I Timothy 1:1, 2; 2:5, 6; I Peter 1:3; Revelation 1:6

Jesus Christ

We believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and teachings. We believe in His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people, and personal visible return to earth. Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-38; John 1:1; 20:28; Romans 9:5; 8:32; II Corinthians 5:21; I Peter 2:21-23; John 20:30, 31; Matthew 20:28; Ephesians 1:4; Acts 1:11; Romans 5:6-8; 6:9, 10; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 9:28; I Timothy 3:16

The Holy Spirit

We believe in the Holy Spirit who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, and empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Christ, and that He is an abiding helper, teacher and guide. John 14:16, 17, 26; 15:26, 27; John 16:9-14; Romans 8:9; I Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; Galatians 5:22-26

Regeneration

We believe that man was created by God in His own image; that he sinned and thereby incurred physical, spiritual and eternal death, which is separation from God; that as a consequence, all human beings are born with a sinful nature and are sinners by choice, and therefore under condemnation. We believe that those who repent and forsake sin and trust Jesus Christ as Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit and become new creatures, delivered from condemnation and receive eternal life. Genesis 1:26; 5:2; Genesis 3; Genesis 2:17; 3:19; Ecclesiastes. 2:11; John 3:14; 5:24; John 5:30; 7:13; 8:12; 10:26; Romans 9:22; II Thessalonians 1:9; Revelation 19:3, 20; 20:10, 14, 15; 21:18; Psalm 51:7; Jeremiah 17:9; James 1:14; Romans 3:19; 5:19; Proverbs 28:13; I John 1:9; John 3:16; John 1:13; II Corinthians 5:17; Romans 8:1

The Church

We believe in the universal Church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members. We believe in the local church, consisting of a company of believers in Jesus Christ, baptized on a credible profession of faith, and associated for worship, work, and fellowship. We believe that God has laid upon the members of the local church the primary task of giving the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost world. Ephesians 2:19-22; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 5:19-21; Acts 2:42; Hebrews 10:23-25

Christian Conduct

We believe that a Christian should live for the glory of God and the well-being of his fellow men; that his conduct should be blameless before the world; that he should be a faithful steward of his possessions; and that he should seek to realize for himself and others the full stature of maturity in Christ. I Corinthians 10:31; Romans 12:1-3; Hebrews 12:1-2; John 14:15, 23-24; I John 2:3-6; II Corinthians 9:6-9; I Corinthians 4:2; Colossians 1:9-10

The Ordinances

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has committed two ordinances to the local church, Baptism and the Lord's Supper. We believe that Christian baptism is the immersion of the believer in water into the name of the triune God. We believe that the Lord's Supper is instituted by Christ for commemoration of His death. We believe that these two ordinances should be observed and administered until the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Matthew 28:18-20; Romans 6:3-5; I Corinthians 11:23-26

Religious Liberty

We believe that every human being is accountable to God, and is responsible to God alone in all matters of faith; that each church is independent and must be free from interference by any ecclesiastical or political authority; that therefore Church and State must be kept separate as having different functions, each fulfilling its duties free from dictation or patronage of the other. 1 Timothy 2:5;
Romans 14:7-9, 12

Church Cooperation

We believe that local churches can best promote the cause of Jesus Christ by cooperating with one another. Such a cooperation, whether a regional or district cooperation, exists and functions by the will of the churches. Acts 15:36,41; 16:5; I Corinthians 16:1; Galatians 1:1-3; Revelation 1:4, 10, 11

The Future

We believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to earth and the final consummation of His kingdom. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment, the eternal joy of the righteous and the endless suffering of the wicked. Matthew 16:27; Mark 14:62; John 14:3; Acts 1:11; Philippians 3:20; I Thessalonians 4:15; II Timothy 4:1; Titus 2:13; I Corinthians 4:5; I Corinthians 15; II Thessalonians 1:7-10; Revelation 20:4-6, 11-15

The Five Solas

There are five doctrines that every Christian needs to know. This is not to say that a person cannot be saved if from ignorance they do not know these, but rather that these five doctrinal truths are of foundational importance to the faith. One may be a Christian without knowing them, but one’s walk with Christ will be greatly enhanced by understanding, applying and treasuring them. To deny them, however, is to undermine the very bedrock of the Christian faith. Historically, they are known as The Five Solas.

Sola Scriptura

The Bible alone is the only infallible and sufficient rule for governing issues of life and doctrine.

Sola Fide

Our justification before God is by faith alone, and not by works.

Sola Gratia

Our salvation is accomplished solely by God's grace alone, and not dependent on any action or condition man provides.

Solus Christus

Jesus Christ is sole mediator between God and man, and our salvation is possible only by His death and resurrection.

Soli Deo Gloria

The Holy Spirit inspired the Scriptures to the glory of God alone. Christ humbled Himself to the point of death and was raised and exalted to the right hand of the Father to the glory of God alone. Grace and mercy are offered to rebellious sinners to the glory of God alone. Justification is by faith alone to the glory of God alone. We live for the glory of God alone!

Faith-Based Policies

faith-based policy on the sanctity of human life

We believe that all human life is sacred and is created and formed by God in His own image, and has been declared by God to be good (Gen. 1:26-31, 2:7; Job 33:4). Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception (Psalm 139:13-16; Jer. 1:4,5) through natural death. Based on this understanding, we hold to the sanctity of human life (Gen. 9:6; Matt. 6:26), and are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all of human life.

faith-based policy on biblical marriage

We believe, based on the teaching of the Scriptures in both the Old and New Testaments, that marriage is an institution ordained by God from the foundation of the world, and intended as a lifelong union of one man and one woman. This idea is supported by the account of creation in Genesis chapters 1 and 2. Genesis 1:26-28 provides that God created man in His own image, immutable and unchangeable, both male and female. The passage implies that a unity of one man and one woman is in some way necessary to fully represent the image of God in mankind. Sexual activities outside of marriage, including but not limited to fornication, adultery, incest, homosexuality, pedophilia, polyamory and bestiality are inconsistent with the teachings of the Bible and the church. Lewd conduct, transgender behavior, and the creation or distribution or viewing of pornography are incompatible with God’s intention. As a result of this policy and our belief in the need for a practice of fidelity to these principles, it is our policy that the facilities of this church may not be used for any ceremony that in any way approves of, solemnizes, supports or allows a same-sex union or a polygamist or any union which, in the judgment of the Elders, in some way constitutes child abuse, or any union contrary to these stated beliefs. It is also the policy of the church that no pastor or member of the church staff shall officiate at any ceremony designed to solemnize, promote, create, or approve of such a union. Nor may any member of the church enter into such a union without being subject to church discipline. A civil government’s sanction of a union will be recognized as a legitimate marriage by the church only to the extent that it is consistent with the definition of marriage found in this Policy Statement.

faith-based policy regarding sexuality

Recognizing that we all struggle with sin, GCT will provide an environment that welcomes people who struggle with sexual sin. We will seek to love all people in Jesus’ name, pointing them towards Christ’s power to forgive and heal. While the Bible teaches that those who engage in sexual sin, sin against their own body, we also recognize that sexual sin is not characterized in Scripture as being more severe than other forms of sin. We will seek God to discern ways that we can directly and indirectly minister and share God’s love with those who struggle with every kind of sin. We also recognize that there is a difference between temptation and behavior and while temptation is sometimes unavoidable, we are responsible for our behavior.

faith-based policy on gender identity

Any attempt to reject or change one’s gender is a rejection of God’s original design, and is incompatible with God’s original design (Gen. 1:26, 27) and therefore incompatible with GCT’s stated beliefs and practice. As such, we do not recognize any change in one’s gender that is inconsistent with Scripture and that does not conform to the way God created that individual.
