How to make Jesus vomit.

November 13, 2020
Hey there Church family:  Have you ever thought about your actions being so spiritually nasty that they make Jesus want to vomit them out of HIs mouth?  The lukewarm church in Laodicea had that effect upon Jesus.  They were complacent, self-satisfied, self-reliant, self-promoting in their pride so that they produced works that made Jesus want to vomit them out of his mouth like a cup of polluted lukewarm water.  Those are Jesus’ very own words.  The church of Laodicea had become complacent towards the things of God.  They loved all of the things of the world in their pagan, imperialistic city.  They happened to be a wealthy, prosperous and successful church which led them to think that they had no need that they could not fulfill themselves.  They did not need Jesus nor His gospel because they had money, privilege, education, prestige and power.  They had come to trust in their own works which means that they had also lost the understanding of their own depravity.  This prideful, complacent combo led them to a moral and religious indifference to the things of God and to a life of ungodliness.

Their stagnant spiritual condition produced works that were unproductive and useless.  Jesus made it crystal clear what He thought of their works.  He considered their works to be so disgusting that He only wanted to spit them out or actually vomit them out.  Can you imagine Jesus being sickened enough by the church’s works to the point of spitting, spewing, vomiting of such works from his mouth?

How do you know if you are lukewarm?  How do you know that your own works are having the same effect on Jesus?  A lukewarm heart says, I have enough of Jesus, I know enough of Jesus, and I experience enough of Jesus.  I don’t need any more of Jesus.  A lukewarm heart says, I have no need to desire or seek after God and I am satisfied with my understanding of the Heavenly Father.  A lukewarm heart says, I am completely content with my current depth of joy in the Holy Spirit.  A lukewarm heart has no real desire to pray and no longing to destroy sinful habits.  A lukewarm does not even see the sinful habits.  Are you lukewarm?  Is your spiritual lukewarmness making Jesus sick?

Great news!  Jesus did not give up on the lukewarm church in Laodicea and He does not give up on us.  He loves His people and for that reason He refuses to tolerate our lukewarmness toward our spiritual condition.  Jesus calls us to be zealous and repent just like He called Laodicea to do the same (Rev. 3:19).  In other words, turn from your sin and fix your eyes upon Me, and I will bless you with great promises, you will sit with Me on My throne as I sat down with My Father on His throne (3:21), Jesus says.  Be more than a conqueror over lukewarmness today.

Revelation 3:19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.

This Sunday we will be meeting in person at the church building if you would like to join us in person at 10am.  And for those who will be staying at home, we will  be live-streaming on our Grace Community Church Topsail YouTube Channel.
