Your will be done, Father, on this earth and in my life today. Church, please stop and think about all of the implications that come when praying that prayer. This is third petition in the Lord’s prayer. Each petition is building on the previous petition. Each petition is focusing more intensely on the heart of man. Whose will is naturally carried out in my kingdom? My will. My obedience to my will generally has a self-serving root because I see the reward of what my heart is actively pursuing and I want that reward to be realized. I have a tendency to reign as king in my kingdom for my own rewards. This means that I want to do things my way and not God’s way. And you and I know that doing things my way leads to earthly rewards that are short lived and very dull in life satisfaction. So, after praying the second petition, Your Kingdom come Father, the next obvious petition would be, please King Jesus rule and reign on Your throne in my heart while I lovingly submit to Your Kingship and Your will be done not mine.
When we ask God’s will to be done. We are asking for Jesus to make the desires of our heart to be locked on obeying the King Jesus no matter what. Our hearts say, Lord, give me the desire to obey Your will when life does not make sense. Lord, give me the desire to agree with Your word and will even when I do not agree with it. Lord give me the desire to submit to your will even when Your will means sacrifice, struggle, pain and suffering. Lord, Your will be done, Your purpose be carried out, Your desires be made manifest in my life. God, I want your will to be done in my life not mine.
Very often we consider God’s will as a will of direction. God, what do you want me to do? We can reduce God’s will to some kind of spiritual corn maze where we seek some kind of secret pathway that God has for us? Do you look at God’s will for your life as a struggling through some spiritual corn maze thinking that if and when you finally make a choice, you really hope it is the right choice? And if it is the right choice, you will receive God’s favor and blessing to fulfill your divine destiny and then and only then will you succeed in life. However, if you make that wrong turn in the spiritual maze of life, the wrong choice, you will lose your way in the corn maze of God’s will, lost forever in the incomprehensible maze of life without blessing or happiness. Church, this kind of thinking is not from scripture. This kind of thinking is paralyzing and hopeless.
There is a biblical way to knowing God's will. God’s way is the way of faith which means that He will not show us what tomorrow looks like. God’s way is trusting that He is already present in tomorrow. God holds tomorrow in His hand and He cares for us when we get there and He is working it all out for our good and His glory. God’s will for you tomorrow is the same as it is today. So, do not worry about tomorrow but seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness today and everything else that you need to follow God’s will for tomorrow will be there waiting.
Scripture is very clear about what God’s will is for all of His children. His will is for us to grow in holiness and sanctification (1 Thessalonians 4:3). God’s will for us is to rejoice, pray, and give thanks always (1 Thessalonians 5:16). God’s will for us is to be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:15-21). God’s will for us is to bear spiritual fruit and grow in knowledge of Him (Colossians 1:9-13). God’s will for us is about who we are in Christ and living out our calling to grow in Christlikeness each and every day.
Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and you will be in God’s will. Pray that God would make that the desire of your heart. Your will be done in my heart Lord and in the heart of every man and woman - not mine.
