Church Family: After last week’s sermon on Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” I was asked the following question on four different occasions: Will this promise from God that we, as believers, will never experience any condemnation from Him only encourage us to sin?
Let me answer this question by asking two more questions:
1- Do you use the promise of Romans 8:1, as an excuse to pursue and rationalize sin?
Or
2- Does this truth of Romans 8:1, create such great joy in your soul that you desire to love, honor and please God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength?
If you find yourself using the glorious promise of “no condemnation” to justify sin, that is a very dangerous position to be in and careful examination should be made as to whether or not you are truly in Christ Jesus.
The Lord desires for you to rejoice in the promise that He has zero condemnation towards you, as you are in Christ. But the declaration towards you of "no condemnation" does not end there. Your life must have evidence of the "law of the Spirit of life" conquering "the law of sin and death" (Rom. 8:2).
Why is the Spirit of life called a law? Because God has made the work of the Holy Spirit a universal constant. God has made you a guarantee that this is how His Holy Spirit works while you are living on this earth. The “law of the Spirit of life” is that the power and authority of the Holy Spirit is sufficient to declare, in Jesus Christ, that you are forgiven and free from all condemnation and empowered to walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit (Rom. 8:3-11). God has made this a universal constant truth for all His followers. He promises that His Holy Spirit of life will be conquering “the law of sin and death" in us.
What is the “law of sin and death”? It is also a universal constant that the power and authority of sin wants to rule over you in a rebellion against God which always ends in condemnation.
The great news is that in Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we have a law of God that says, His very Holy Spirit that is within us will not only declare us to be without condemnation but also empower us to live our lives in a way that the power and authority of sin is defeated.
Do you want freedom from sin? Fight back with the universal constant God guarantee that the "law of the Spirit of life" has set you free, in Christ Jesus, from the "law of sin and death" (Rom. 8:2)
Therefore, God’s promise of “no condemnation” upon us will never lead us to rationalize and continue in sin because the law of the Spirit of life will be waging war against the law of sin and death in us.
See you Sunday, rejoicing in the Spirit of life. Steve
